GQ: 2012 Best New Menswear Designers

A couple of weeks ago, GQ announced it's six best new menswear designers in America which includes: Ovadia & Sons, Ian Velardi, Todd Snyder, Saturdays NYC, BLK DNM and Mark McNairy. As with last year, the group of designers will be creating a limited edition capsule collection! However, this year the line will be produced in conjunction with Gap. Last year the collaboration was done with Dockers and housed at Bloomingdale's. Prices were definitely on the steeper side (i.e. $200 for slacks) so hopefully the partnership with Gap will help drive down price points.

These collabs are nice because they're just for the guys. No angry-mobs, no colored wristbands with 15 minute time slots to shop, no need to grab everything in site and edit down once you get home and no hoarders (thereby reducing the craziness factor and the need to pop a valium while waiting to check out).

Here's a quick rundown of the designers selected by GQ and what they are known for:

Marni x H&M–The Keepers vrs The Returns

Marni is without a doubt one of my favorite designers - bold, quirky and different without having to be overtly sexy. The new collaboration with H&M had me certain I would break my budget - and in the end it still held true but it will be worth it down the road. What I wanted more than anything was the jewelry which eluded me. Perhaps I will have to make a trip to the bead store to DIY some pieces in the near future.

Fortunately, I was still able to snag some of my beloved pieces from this collaboration. Since I never sleep enough as it is and the launch this morning fell on a work day, I wasn't sure I had the energy to even attempt to snag any pieces. I originally contemplated asking my friends in London to scope out the scene for me since I had better luck there when the Lanvin collection launched. However the closer the launch date became, the more and more my determination and will grew. I'm not one who will spend the night or even wake up at the crack of dawn, but I still came out feeling victorious.

This morning I woke up at my ordinary time, but left the house much faster without a shower, minimal grooming and outfit consideration. My first stop was H&M Soho and I arrived there about 8:25am and I snagged a wristband for a 9:45am time slot - since work called, I decided to stop by Herald Square and upon my arrival at 8:48am I managed to snag the last wristband for the last time slot and escape for an early lunch.

Since I was on a tight timeline, having to get back to the office, I cashed out quickly without trying anything on. I also picked up a couple extra items at the request of my co-workers - since none of these items worked out for me I will be returning them tomorrow as I make my rounds to scour additional pieces after work. I plan on returning these around 3:30-4pm at the Rockefeller Center location at 51st & 5th Ave in case you are interested.

The Winners:
1) The Silk Front Cardigan was one of the items I had been coveting since I first saw the collection online. This is a mix media cardigan with 100% silk panelling on the front and 100% cotton knit trim, sleeves and back. The fit of the cardigan is a bit boxy so I ended up having to size down from my usual H&M size. The knit has a slight scratchy feeling (like rayon) but is not uncomfortable. The silk front is very thin but acceptable blouse weight. I think it will make a great summer cardigan for the office - perfect for fending of air conditioning breeze.

2) The Stripe Socks are very sporty and simple but feel quintessentially Marni. Not a bad trade to have that for $10. They are fairly thin, I can see my knee through the top rib if I look closely. 80% Cotton/20% Polyamide Blend has a smooth cool hand that is again reminiscent of rayon. The side stripes are a little bit beefier and have a slight puffy feeling.

3) Silk Scarf is actually half of a silk scarf - it's a bias triangle that looks like a square might have been cut in half in production and the inside edge is left raw. It's 100% silk twill and has nice substantial hand. The fact that it's a half triangle doesn't detract from it's end use and in fact makes it less bulky.

4) Leather Zip Front Shirt - H&M calls this a shirt but it seems almost like a jacket to me. It has a stiff feel and the patent leather I was surprised to discover is actually real patent leather. The white patent has a high glossy modern look that is lined while the sleeves and back are heavy knit cotton that has some weight. It again is a little boxy and I wish I had sized down, but even though it's a little roomy, it does not look bad zipped up or open. It is a little sculptural on the body and is a little boxy but in a very flattering way.

The Returns (From top left in a circular direction)

1) Knit Tie - Is quite skinny and a high quality heavy cotton knit made in Italy, but not distinctive enough to earn a place in my wardrobe
2)The Patterned Button-Up Shirt (Size Large Mens) I originally purchased this thinking that either Jeff or my boyfriend might want it, but closer inspection showed me that it was cut like the women's collection very generously and is therefor much too big.
3)The Cardigan (Size 6) - I bought it for my co-worker or myself if the smaller size didn't work out, but since it did, this one is going back to the store.
4)The Applique Tee Shirt (Size Medium) - With it's bright colors it's quite a fun whimsical t-shirt that I thought my co-workers might like but it was apparently too bright for them and it's going back. The blanket stitch around each of the motifs is a nice touch.
5)The Tie Waist Tank (Size 8) - I bought it thinking it might work for my co-worker who is usually a size 6) She loved it, but unfortunately since this collection runs big, it did not work for her. The armpits were too low and it was too baggy.
7) The Illustrated Tee (Size Small)- This tee-shirt is absolutely adorable and 25% of the proceeds go towards the Red Cross Japan. It was almost a keeper but I don't wear that many tee-shirts and I needed to cut back.
8) The Patent Jacket (Size 4) - On the right person this might look fabulous (someone taller than 5'3"), but since I was already keeping the Patent Zip Front Shirt I decided against this. It has a heavy stiff feel that is also slightly more awkward feeling because the leather is in both the front and the back of the jacket and the knit is kept on the sleeves only. The jacket is not only heavy in the fabric, it weighs quite a lot too. The advantage this jacket offers is it has pockets and full sleeves that might be more practical in a wider variety of weather conditions.
9) The Polka Dot Silk Scarf - Scarf is the same construction and material as the one I'm keeping but I figured I had the dots covered with my cardigan. The print looks a little bit dull compared to the other dot prints in the collection.
10) The Plastic Tote is a very cool piece, the colors are fantastic and although it's a plastic, it does not look cheap. The downside is that the strap is not long enough to wear as a shoulder bag and it can only be carried on the elbow, wrist or hand which is a big no no for someone like me, who may accidentally misplace bags at a sample sale.

NYFW Runway Review: The Blonds

The final show I attended of NYFW was the loudest as Milk Studios was overtaken by the downtown cool kids strutting their most outrageous outfits. Before the show even began I saw Spike Hair, furry monster get-up, angel wings and one topless bathing suit paired with tassle pasties. Celebs like Stacy London, Nigel Barker, Miss J Alexander, Jay Manuel, Robert Verdi were enjoying themselves and posing for photos as everyone strutted their best stuff. The energy and over the top exuberance had me not knowing where to look and I scarcely noticed the electric motorcycle on the runway that was deeply connected to the theme of the show. Right before the show began there was a sudden flurry of activity as Lil Kim made her way into the room.

By the time the crowd settled down into their seats and the lights dimmed the energy of the room was electric. A posse of men lead the way down the runway for a thoroughly studded and leathered up biker chick with big hair that tumbled out of a jet black helmet.

The sparkly futuristic and sculptural pieces followed bringing to life a heroine that is tough as nails but dead sexy. Blonde hair hung down from helmets in a perfect pony and the mantra, "Live Fast, Die Blond" was emblazoned on one of the moto jackets. For womenswear the focus was on what The Blonds do best - impeccable corsets that look a bit extreme with mini hot pants but if paired with skinny jeans could light up the town on a special night out.
Skirt lengths were short and shorter! As a girl who loves sparkle in her life the sexy shoes were in Swarovski crystals and studs throughout the collection were high on my wish list.

While this is the first Blonds show I can remember seeing menswear, it seemed comparatively tame. While it definitely was as sparkly as the womenswear it was also a lot more covered up. Motorcycle jackets, printed pants and shirts were covered in geometric and animal prints with a generous smattering of studs. There were a couple of shirts without sides that reminded me of decorative bibs, the way the swung around when the men walked. I guess in the realm of menswear the prints and glitter combined are more than most men could take. Like the womenswear though the glittering kicks definitely got my attention.

I have to thank David and Phillipe Blond for reminding me always that fashion is and always should be fun - a fact that sometimes gets lost in the bustle of NYFW.

Dupli-Caught: Zara vrs Lanvin

A recent trip to Zara surprised me because I spotted a familiar face. The oft imitated design of Lanvin tee has been resurrected again without the blessing of Alber Elbaz. I first spotted the tee in 2009 and it won my heart with the cheeky expression, soft bow and heart shaped lips. And Forever 21 not being one to miss out on an opportunity promptly knocked off the tee without the bow and with many more heart graphics. Then in 2010, Benetton surprisingly followed suit by copying the idea of tee and adding a graphic bow instead. The tee continued to live when Alber Elbaz decided to give the public what they craved in a legitimate version through his collaboration with H&M at an affordable price point. Now it's 2012 and perhaps Zara thought by now we would have forgotten about the origins of the face tee? With a soft chiffon bow and wider set eyes, it's priced at $25.90. While I have to admit even though a few years have passed since it's original incarnation, the face tee is so girly and adorable. The question remains though after so many years do people still want this tee shirt? Zara certainly thought so. What are your thoughts?

Stopped by the Barney's sale on my way home from work today and snagged a quick picture of the new markdowns. For menswear, take an extra 40% off designer wear/accessories/shoes, 50% off outerwear and ties, 60% sportswear and pants/jeans and 75% off damages. For Womenswear, take an extra 40% off accessories, 50% for everything else and 75% off damages.

For the menswear designer pieces - it's all pretty much Thom Browne dress shirts. There are some items including Ralph Lauren Black Label, Jil Sander, Etro and Kiton but those are all considered sportswear - but it's a bigger discount so no complaints here. Discount wise, based on previous sales, there should be one more markdown where menswear items hit 75% off.

Note: If you're looking for women's damages - check out the damages section in menswear before you head out - there are quite a few pieces floating around, probably leftover from some overzealous hoarder who got carried away before discarding the excess.

My findings co-incide with other Barneys WH sale reports floating around, I'm definitely not a fan of the sale this year. While I did pick up a couple things - I wouldn't necessarily recommend checking out.

NYFW Presentation: Korto Momolu Fall 2012

In the midst of NYFW I had a chance to see Korto Momolu's presentation at the Bryant Park Hotel's Cellar Bar. Upon my arrival, the venue was jumping with a scene as guests grabbed drinks and enjoyed lounging as music played. I had to maneuver my way around the crowds to see the clothes that were on models perched on pedestals throughout the room. The collection entitled Monaco was inspired by jet set glamorous icons like Bridget Bardot and Grace Kelly.

Black, Gold, Champagne and Pewter comprised the primary color story while occasionally a vibrant pop of canary yellow woke things up. Fabrications were in charmeuse, lace, brocade and metallic menswear adding a soft sheen of luxury throughout the collection. My favorite pieces were the elongated silhouettes that brought to mind the ease of 70s Halston. The champagne maxi dress with the bateau neck was a particular favorite.

Some of the shorter flared skirts looked out of place and didn't seem like they sat with the collection. They felt a little bit too literally 80s - especially in the outfit with the sheer skirt and bra showing and the single glove.

Make-up was all about the smokey eye and sculpted cheekbone while hair was either pulled up into severe sculptural buns or styled short and brushed out.

While there were plenty of beautiful elements to the collection, the venue and slightly heavy-handed styling were distractions. Overall though there were many wearable pieces that a woman who loved understated glamor would crave.

NYFW Presentation: Norisol Ferrari Fall 2012

The Norisol Ferrari presentation was one that took me back in time in what the designer describes as Jean Harlow meets Tina Turner in Mad Max. There were dramatic silhouettes that made me think a little bit of Charles Worth-esque (late 1900s) glamor while other items that made me think of something a very put together Goth might enjoy.

Since the designer grew up in NY in the 80s and was nurtured by drag queens and nightlife impresarios the flair for the dramatic in silhouette and line must be second nature. Strategically placed seams and color blocking flatter the silhouette and place emphasis on a tiny waist.

NYFW Runway Review: Farah Angsana Fall 2012

The Farah Angsana Fall 2012 collection exuded exactly the type of luxury that the young jet set socialite might demand. Opulence, sparkle and drama dominated the runway - this is not clothing for the faint of heart or for those who like to hide in a corner at an event. If fashion should be about empowering a woman to feel beautiful and glamorous - Farah Angsana has found strength in what she knows best. Afterall the designer caters to women who like herself travel the world and you could see hints of the global influence in the kaftans to flamenco flounces.

And while there were definitely some covered up pieces - they were form fitting as to still show off the figure. Black, cream and pewter day wear opened the show but was soon replaced by by a parade of glittering cocktails and evening gowns in vibrant jewel tones like fiery orange, ruby red, violet, sapphire and emerald.

Skirt lengths were either mini, flouncy to the knee or flowing full length dresses that billowed into a soft swirl of fabric as models rounded the runway. And while earlier in the runway show garments revealed sheer panels and thigh high slits for the confidant woman, nothing prepared me for the finale garment that was sheer from the waist down save for some very strategic placement of glittery sequins. Think I wasn't the only one because I could hear the gasps and oohs from all around me.

A collection for the confidant woman who is not afraid to sparkle in a crowd.

NYFW Presentation: Mathieu Mirano Fall 2012

When I entered The Box at Lincoln Center I knew very little to nothing about the 20 year old designer behind the namesake collection Mathieu Mirano but I was pleasantly surprised. My efforts leaving Brooklyn twice in one day had been rewarded by a skillfully tailored collection that was inspired by a dream about dragons and the women that conquered them.

Details like leather paillets, ruched metallics, and claw-like metal hardware all play up on the dragon theme but fortunately not too literally. The result is a little like armor that a modern day heroine would wear if she was going to an event and had to look dead sexy. The garments fit almost like a second skin in fabrics like stretch satin, leather and velvet .

The color palette was kept simple in black, pewter, silver, antique navy, crimson and gold. The color combinations were particularly striking when combined to create graphic sun ray shapes that radiate strategically around the body. I appreciate that the backs of these dresses have not been forgotten and are just as striking as the fronts.

Mirano has previously cited Alexander McQueen as one of his greatest influences and I can see it in his attention to tailoring, details and his flair for drama. I have a feeling that we'll be seeing more of this budding designer in the future on red carpet. A beautiful, well executed and sophomore effort.

New Food, New Life: Gluten-Free, Dairy-Free, Egg-Free

So at the end of last year I noticed that little by little my quality of life had started deteriorating over the last couple years. At first my allergies went out of control manifesting themselves in strange new ways that made me feel hopelessly out of energy and on the verge of narcoleptic. I would sleep for hours on end and still wake up feeling exhausted. On the rare occasion I had energy an activity as little as doing the dishes caused me to seek my bed again. After I learned of my allergies I spent a fortune on allergy medication, encasements for all my bedding, an air purifier and HEPA vacuum and vigilantly washed my bedding in hot water once a week in hopes that my allergies would improve. The allergy medication helped immediately. I felt functional again but not good. On my best days my energy level was an 8/10 but I always felt like I had a fog over my mind and my quality of life.

Since my body was so occupied fighting my allergies my immune system became weaker and my ability to fight off viruses and infection became way below normal. And again I added more medication to the routine but I often felt like I was fighting a war against my body. Arcade Fire's song title "My Body is a Cage" felt all too real to me.

I've been lactose intolerant for years but my digestion started to get worse no matter how many Lactaid pills I popped, it didn't seem to be enough. I feel like for as long a I could remember feeling bloated and uncomfortable was normal and I thought I was like everyone else and I began to wonder if it was something else besides dairy that was making my stomach upset. First my blame went to cabbage, then chick peas and broccoli and part of me suspected gluten but I was unsure and partly in denial.

Finally I started thinking that maybe what I felt wasn't normal and having to pop multiple pills a day for various ailments wasn't natural. What would the long terms effects of all these drugs do to me? Finally I decided to do something about it and take my life back into control. I was sick of only treating the symptoms and wanted to get to the root cause so I went to a Naturopathic Doctor. I learned that while I can't control my external allergens, my internal allergens could be controlled by watching what I put into my body.

After a 96-Food Panel blood test against the most common allergens/foods I learned a lot about what I needed to avoid. Turns out a lot of foods have been causing my body to freak out but the major ones were gluten, dairy and eggs. I also had to eliminate cranberries and almonds in addition to reducing tomatoes, soy and garlic. I think it's the foods on the reduce list that make me possibly the saddest, but since they are not for the eliminate list - I am trying to not use them in my personal cooking but if they happen to be in food I eat while I'm out, I'll live with that.

I felt relief knowing that perhaps there is an answer to how my body was feeling and although I love food, I've learned as my friend Karen says, "Nothing tastes as good as healthy feels". So instead of focusing on all that I couldn't have I try to focus on what I still can have and I view everything else as poison. Maybe it sounds drastic but in order to make my quality of life and health a priority, drastic measures were needed.

Armed with a list from my naturopathic doctor I hit the grocery stores determined that food will still be enjoyable, delicious and healthy. Fortunately thanks to the support of many friends who are also gluten-free, I've been figuring things out.

It's only been 1.5 months and I haven't gone hungry yet. Surprisingly, I can feel the difference already. My immune system is stronger, my mind is clearer, my body seems to bounce back better and digestion is in a place that I never remembered or knew that it could be. Although I may be able to re-introduce some foods to my diet, I feel so good lately that I'm not sure I'll want to - although may have to add back garlic and tomatoes in full force one day!

Anyways here is one of my fave recipes for breakfast that I've modified for Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal with Toasted Pecans.

Pumpkin Spice Oatmeal with Toasted Pecans

Recipe adapted from Nourish Network to be Gluten-Free and Dairy-Free:
1 Cup of Gluten-Free Steel Cut Oats - I used Bob's Red Mill + water to cook it.
1 cup canned pumpkin (half a 15 ounce can)
1/2 cup rice/coconut milk
3 tablespoons brown sugar (Reduce or use agave if too sweet for your taste)
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice (or 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/4 teaspoon allspice)
1/4 cup pecans, toasted and crumbled (optional)

Boil water and cook 1 cup of GF steel cut oats according to the directions on the package. Add pumpkin, rice/coconut milk, sugar, spices to the pot. Combine into oatmeal stirring until thoroughly heated through - maybe 5 minutes or so. Serve with some toasted pecans on top and enjoy! It's almost like eating pumpkin pie in a bowl for breakfast!

Winter Mixtape: Warmth of Love

I made this mixtape a few weeks ago inspired by my first months in Chicago. I included songs that have been on heavy rotation on my iPod as well as songs that capture how I feel about Chicago - a little nervous, but above all, jazzed and freaking excited. A lot of girly and dorky bedroom dancing happened in the production of this mixtape.

The people of Chicago are amazingly welcoming. There are nice people in New York too; there's a camaraderie that happens because almost everyone is a transplant. But in Chicago it feels more basic than that. It's not about a need for friends, but rather a way of life. The other thing that differentiates Chicago from New York is its modesty. This windy city is full of quietly amazing talent and secrets.

Though mild this year, Chicago winters are long and cold. Don't let anyone tell you otherwise. But the wonderful people of this city have kept my spirits high and made me fall in love. I feel so lucky to be here, and I'm so thankful for the new friends in my life.

Chicago is doing me good. Rebuilding my life has helped me figure out how to make time for myself and my passions. I've been fortunate enough to meet some incredible DJs who have inspired me to step up my game. Two DJs in particular have been especially helpful and influential - DJ Major Taylor and Carlos Capcom. They're each so talented, so talented that if I were to one day be half as great I'd be completely satisfied.

Since moving here, I've entered a couple DJ contests. One for was for a chance to DJ at New York Fashion Week. I didn't win that one, but I did make it into the Top 3. The other one I just entered yesterday for a chance to DJ at SXSW. I made an hour podcast for PodOmatic, and there will be two rounds. Win or lose, I'm excited just to be challenging myself and sharing music I love.

Mr. Porter Turns 1!

Mr. Porter (Net-a-Porter's male counterpart) just turned one! It's one of the best online retailers for menswear out there and is great for window shopping, learning about designers and on top of that, it can show you how to pair things together to make a solid outfit.

To celebrate their b-day, Mr. Porter launched 10 exclusive pocket squares with a variety of designers including Alexander Olch, Band of Outsiders, Drake’s, Horiyoshi the Third, Jean Shop, Oliver Spencer, Our Legacy, Richard James, The Elder Statesman and YMC.

My personal faves are Alexander Olch for the plaid, Band of Outsiders for the simplicity and texture of the fabric and Horiyoshi the Third for the amazing print.

NYFW Presentation: Lorena Sarbu Fall 2012

Waking up on a Sunday morning is always a challenge and hauling myself to Lincoln Center for 10:30am from Brooklyn took a bit of convincing but once I arrived I was pleasantly surprised by Lorena Sarbu's collection of glamorous special occasion frocks that would look perfectly at ease on any Hollywood red carpet.

While the silhouettes aren't ground breaking the interesting treatments of beading and illusion panels slim the figure by nipping in the waist or sides. Sequin, feathers and tulle in rich jewel tones and neutrals were well balanced and although a whole lot of glitter - not at all gaudy.

Necklines were bateau, plunging, sweetheart or one shoulder while skirts were either a mini, a column or a fishtail silhouette.

Aside from a bold lip, make-up was soft and natural and paired back well to the loosely tousled curls in low slung ponytails creating a woman that is elegant and thankfully not too done up. Nails were an interesting opaque putty color that paired back well to the nudes of the dresses looking simultaneously natural and unusual.

My standout faves are the beaded halter dress in nude with the radiating bugle beads, the nude fishtail dress with the black netting & beads and finally the red bateau above with the lace inset panels.

It is no wonder that Lorena Sarbu already has a following in Hollywood - the collection is classy old school glamor that screams screen siren.

Orla Kiely x Unliqo Launch

I love holidays! No work, time to catch up with friends and to time to see what's new at Uniqlo (why can't every day be a holiday??!) A couple of friends were in town and wanted to check out the Orla Kiely collab so we stopped by the 5th Avenue location earlier today.

If you're a fan of Kiely's aesthetic, you'll like this collab. Her prints dominate and are at the forefront for most pieces from T's to button up shirts, to dresses, to slippers and to scarves.

The pieces are easy to pair with lots of basics from Uniqlo's main collection including belts, cardigans, sweaters and trousers so if you're looking for an entire outfit, the store has you covered.

In terms of pricing, the button ups are $39.90, T's are $19.90 and scarves are going for just $12.90 a pop! Sizing was available across the board for items though smaller sizes seemed to be dwindling down.

In my opinion I thought the scarves were definitely the highlight. Bold prints, bright colors and easy on the pocket - what else do you need? They're great accent pieces that can add a pop of color to an otherwise ho-hum office uniform or can spruce up your casual wear for the weekend.

Thanks to a tip from a reader in an earlier post, we learned that they were giving away free totes with every purchase. The tote itself is actually pretty nice!

Runway Review: Geoffrey Mac Fall 2012

I started off this past Sunday hitting up Geoffrey Mac's show at Exit Art in Chelsea. The mood of the show was upbeat with tons of color, plays on geometric shapes and textures. The models all sported these amazing voluminous 60's hairdos paired with bold eyeshadow to complement the collection. In some ways it reminded me of the Stepford Wives of the future!

In addition to the multitude of colors including neons, aquas, yellow and red were paired with neutrals like black, white and camel. A lot of the pieces sported strong and exaggerated shoulder lines which gave the collection an edgy and futuristic vibe. Leather was combined with different fabrics and shapes was seen throughout the collection.

Overall definitely one of the more out there and light-hearted shows I've been to in a while! My work schedule has been brutal for the last month and it was refreshing to be reminded that life is fun, full of color and not always serious!

Uniqlo X Orla Kiely: Window Display

A couple of days ago on my walk to K-town, I walked pass the Herald Square Uniqlo store on 34th and spotted the new Orla Kiely display window setup.

Orla Kiely is a London based designer who recently opened up shop in NYC this past year and is known her great prints which are clean and subtle yet bold. The pieces are easy to wear, fun and add a bit of flair to the rest of your outfit. The collection drops in stores on Feb 20, 2012 so mark your calendars!

NYFW Presentation: Katya Leonovich Fall 2012

Katya Leonovich the designer who last season masterfully brought control out of chaos and who has a fascination with beautiful garbage this time presented a collection called "An Architectural Aesthetic" at the Box in the Lincoln Center.

Overhead paintings that the designer herself had painted of New York City buildings served as the inspiration for the collection and the prints.

The paintings themselves served up as the colorful basis for prints. The prints were in sharp contrast to the rippled metallics that remind me of building surfaces, the structural boned leathers that look like the ribs of a building and the sharp graphic use of black and white/python. Sometime self tubes of fabric were used to create a protective cage around the body but no matter how sharp those style lines of the corsets appear there is always still an element of soft femininity. It's a s simple as fabric flowing over the hips in a soft slightly rounded manner to a peplum shape and organic draped chiffon creating almost petals around the body.

As for beauty it was kept relatively simple to highlight the statement making clothes. A neutral lip with classic smokey eyes were what the face was all about while hair was very pretty in soft set finger waves that gave the girls a very polished and ladylike feel.

This is a look that is not for the faint of heart - someone who is not afraid to be seen or make a statement. While interesting details abound in this collection, my personal favorite pieces were the simplest ones like the metallic crush skinny pants, the white ribbed jacket below and the contrast black and white cape.

Runway Review: Sally LaPointe Fall 2012

I have had the privilege of watching Sally LaPointe grow as a designer over the last few seasons from ethereal alien beauty that defied human proportions to a softer hauntingly romantic view. This season brought Sally LaPointe's architectural expertise in conjunction with softer less dramatic shapes resulting in a collection that is more commercial than previous efforts.

LaPointe's vision carefully balances the dark beauty that I have come to love with wearable pieces that I need in my closet

The scene is set with beautiful ombre rust tone walls and industrial looking pillars while experimental tracks are playing that begin to weave in the sounds of violins.

The collection started with a clean slate in head to toe cream perhaps to wipe our minds of anything that we might expect the designer to bring to the table. Fortunately LaPointe's expertise with structure and proportion served her well to create designs that are simple yet striking. The architectural elements that I've come to love like dramatic shoulders, extended peplums and cape-like sleeves are still there and the softness that last season brought is still present but there is a new slouchy/ease in some of the separates that ooze confidence and a designer coming into her own.

The designer cited Kafka the Metamorphosis highlighting the feeling of neglect and isolation as the inspiration for this collection. And you can see a slow metamorphosis in the color palette for this collection from white to blue to ombre, to dripping gold to burgundy to chocolate brown to finally black. There is also a change from lady-like to glamourous to sportswear to vamp. Some of the shapes in the collection were vaguely reminiscent of cocoons and insect wings.

Soon warm tones of gold, amber, rust, burgundy and chocolate flood the stage bringing with it a new level richness and refined sophistication. While there wasn't much print in this collection the ombre print that looked like a sunset about to burst into flames was unforgettable. I also couldn't keep my eyes off the amazing graphic cut-out applique that created a dramatic large scale lace effect. The collection in my mind screamed luxury and I loved every minute of it.

Chicago Nightlife: The Ponzi at The Bedford

Since moving to Chicago, I've had the pleasure of DJing a couple parties at The Bedford in Wicker Park. It's a beautiful space inside an old bank with fantastic sound, and the specialty cocktails are fantastic. It's truly one of my favorite venues in the city.

This Wednesday will be the third edition of The Ponzi party at The Bedford. This week I'll be spinning with DJ Moppy, filling in for DJ Castle, so you can expect to hear some great music. Runway Review: Cynthia Rowley Fall 2012

The runway show started and before I even see the clothes in person, huge screens are projecting the models as they walk from multiple angles providing an artful backdrop to the show. It's no wonder seating was arranged entirely on one side of an extra long runway.

The collection is inspired by mechanics and the idea of a overall that is so easy, effortless but also simultaneously tough and sexy. Design details like zip fronts, buckle straps, button ups reference the garb that mechanics wear but the fabrications in silk, leather, denim, plaid and jersey and clusters of sequin patches suggest luxury instead of a garage. It's not to say this collection was without any layering - turtlenecks looked great with sparkling DanniJo jewels that come so high up the neck that it makes me think of women pictured in National Geographic.

Burgundy, Fire Orange, Chocolate, Olive, Denim, Indigo Blue and White comprised the sophisticated color palette for the collection.

The prints were most interesting. Some reminded me of that swirly pattern you see in a puddle of oil while others looked tie-dyed in a way that a bright rag might look if a mechanic wiped their hands on it at the end of the day. Others prints almost machine-like giving a robotic feel and others still look a bit like a burning flame.

The collection contrasted boxy easy tops or leather tee shirts with slip skirts and slim cut trousers with a slightly dropped crotch for a slouchy effortless look.

I loved how this collection stuck very closely to the theme but in a very non-literal and unexpected delivery while keeping true to Rowley's aesthetic of creating non-girly feminine clothes that are both comfortable and effortlessly stylish.

Runway Review: Costello Tagliapietra Fall 2012

Costello Tagliapietra was my first show of NYFW and the energy was flowing at Milk Studios while The Misshapes were spinning tunes that will get your heart pumping. It was a full house and out of the corner of my eye I spotted Kate Lanphear, my personal style icon and US Editor in Chief of Elle Magazine in the front row along (bottom right photo) with some of the crew from Barneys New York. Things were going to get interesting and a familiar hush filled the room as the lights darkened and the audience prepared themselves to be wowed.

In typical Costello Tagliapietra fashion soft, feminine draping hit the runway in the form of dresses that exude casual ease, elegance and luxury. The prints painted by Jeffrey Costello reminded me of sea anenomes - a bit mystical, quirky and very organic.

The color palette reflects the prints in beautiful and unusual awkward tones of Raisin, Seagreen, Bark, Acid Green, Rust, Steel Blue and Indigo that seem to lend visual movement and compliment the artful draping. It also gives me pleasure to know that the duo wherever possible relies on the eco-friendly AirDye process to dye and print the fabrics in their collection without using a single drop of water

While beautiful dresses are the effortless backbone of the collection, I was also magnetized by separates like the printed skinny pants and the reversible hooded coats that look so easy to wear and comfortable.

While many of the dresses have lots of fabric gathered around the body, it is not without waist emphasis to ensure a feminine silhouette. Most of the looks were pretty covered up but some offered just the slightest sliver of skin for a hint of sexiness that is not in your face.

Fabrics with a contrasting color on either side also made their way into some of the draped jerseys for a fun unexpected pop of color.

My personal favorite pieces were the reversible coat, the rust colored one sleeve dress, the steel blue silk twist dress, the printed brown scarf neck dress, the steel grey/seafoam drape neck halter dress and the cafe colored satin drape neck gown.

As for beauty, it was kept simple with a neutral lip and soft doe eyes that are highlighted in a light pink and steely blue. Hair was kept very clean and lady-like in a low roll bun. For nails a chocolatey burgundy shade was created using Essie Nail Polish.

Overall the collection was focused, glamorous and elegant - what more could a woman ask for?

The 3rd Annual Fashion 2.0 Awards–February 2012

Last night I had the chance to attend the 3rd Annual Fashion 2.0 awards at the SVA Theatre. Since I first attended 3 years ago the event has grown exponentially along with the advent of social media as part of our everyday lives. The event was bigger than ever with bloggers from Style Coalition, social media enthusiasts, social media superstars (like @dkny) in attendance and mingling over cocktails and appetizers. I got to meet ladies I've seen only through their blogs or twitter and finally have a chance to put a face to a name.

As for the awards ceremony it was hosted by the most adorable, energetic, charming and hilarious Robert Verdi who began the show by tossing a couple pairs of sunglasses from his brand new HSN line to the audience.

There was no surprise when the award for Best Twitter went to @dkny for her witty and constant Tweets! Best Facebook Award went to Bergdorf Goodman. Best Blog award went to DKNY. A special new visionary award was presented to the Gilt Groupe co-founders Alexis Maybank and Alexandra Wilkis Wilson to acknowledgement of their achievements and leadership as e-commerce game-changers and their tremendous impact on the way the fashion industry/luxury brands, perceive the online space. Best website award went to Marc Jacobs international. Best Mobile App went to Tiffany and Co. Top Innovator Award went to Kate Spade NY. Last but not least the Best Online Video Award went to Prada for their Real Fantasies Spring/Summer 2011 video I've posted below.

And while not everyone took home awards I was glad we got a chance to sit back and pause and appreciate some of the other videos like Bergdorf's Unleashed, Lanvin with Pitbull, Norma Kamali in 3-D and Rachel Roy's Casual Friday campaign.

We also got a chance to listen to Norma Kamali herself talk about her love of technology and her journey into fashion and tech starting in the 60s. Kamali stated, "Fashion is not about the clothes today. What matters and where innovation is, is how we tell the story. How we personalize it and humanize it...I used to say the 60s were the most exciting time in my life, but it's not anymore. It's about today and tomorrow." Kudos to Ms Kamali for her inspiring words and for always looking forward to the future and embracing it. Can't wait to see her next 3-D fashion video bring fashion to life on the screen.

Katherine Kwei Spring/Summer 2012 Collection

A while back I was invited to check out the new Katherine Kwei Spring/Summer 2012 Collection at Delicatessen in Soho. We got to check out a collection inspired by Tahiti and the South Pacific islands. The turquoise snakeskin shimmers and reminds me of the ocean and somehow ended up being the exact shade of my nail polish that day! Guava, passion fruit, oyster, shell pink and lime are the fresh colors that bring a breath of Spring to the air that could brighten up any outfit.

The intricately hand knotted pieces look great in the new colors and feature new details on familiar silhouettes. The Vivian collection gets new life in pearlescent leather - especially in the Barbie pink version - it is such a great twist on the classic look of a quilted bag in an entirely new approach. I have been a fan of the Jessica collection since it launched. The Jessica Mini with it's simple saddle shape looks like the perfect mini bag to take with you for life on the go. I was particularly taken by makeover the Donna Sling Bag got in printed water snakeskin with chain strap. It looks a little disco and a whole lot of useful to dress up or dress down - the difference a strap can make.

As the evening progressed I got to hang out with some wonderful ladies over cocktails and snacks while coloring in my very own Katherine Kwei charms bringing be back to memories of my childhood. We weren't just coloring for fun though because to keep things interesting Katherine Kwei was giving away a bag to one of the attendees for best coloring job. Although I didn't win, it was nevertheless a memorable and relaxing night that pulled me away from my everyday - not quite as far as Tahiti but a girl can dream! Check out some of my colored in charms below inspired by the real deal.

Spot Check: Jason Wu for Target at Atlantic Terminal

After a 3am online shopping failure of items not adding to my cart, sizes not found and going in circles I gave up at 3:32am for the comfort of my pillow. Unfortunately my online failure left me unsettled and wanting a piece of Wu even more. While lines at Atlantic Terminal began at 6am, by the time I headed over they were completely wiped out of sizes XS, S and M. If you are a size L or XL, the world is still your oyster with racks still laden with dot printedand striped dresses and tie neck blouses. If you are looking for the floral print illusion top, pearl neck floral dress or floral pleated skirt, you're out of luck. Ditto on accessories. Nary a scarf or purse to be seen.

Lack of sizes didn't stop women from hoping as they rummaged the racks in hopes of sizes.

One style there was plenty of was the tie neck blouse. I even found a couple size Smalls unfortunately one had a mysterious stain on it that appeared to be morning coffee spilled during the early am shopping scuffles.

A trip to the change room revealed a rack full of unwanted merch - mostly Jason Wu for Target but unfortunately all in sizes M-XL. A lady in front of me scored the last size small illusion top as staffers helped organize and sort out customer wants.

If you were thinking of heading out to the Target by Flatbush/Brooklyn College, don't bother unless you are a size XL - a most wonderful gentleman volunteered himself to attempt to snag a few items for me but was left empty handed (still thankful though that he tried :)!). Apparently it's a bi-coastal phenomenon as my friend in Seattle did not have better luck. Did you manage to snag a piece of the collaboration or is there still any left where you live?

Chicago Shopping: Jason Wu for Target

This morning my friend Rachel and I met at the Target in Logan Square 15 minutes before doors opened. This was the line at 7:45AM. It was mostly women ahead of us, but around 9:50 a huge crowd of women pulled into the parking lot with their significant others and even children. And if the security Segway was any indication, we could tell we were going to be in for a little madness.

There were fully stocked racks to start. By 8:10AM, they were almost completely ransacked. Dozens of women running, grabbing, squealing... it was so intense! I picked up the signature navy striped dress, which Rachel ended up buying, but I had to fight a man for it. We both grabbed it at the same time, and I had to give him the look of death.

By 8:45AM, only a few lonely pieces were left and mostly in size L or XL. As for the accessories, the scarves and wicker bags were gone almost instantly. When we left, there were a few small racks of unclaimed black clutches, canvas totes and flower satchels.

With some determination, speed and agility, we each took home a few pieces from the Jason Wu for Target collection. The quality is consistent with previous designer collaborations; the sizing however varied from piece to piece - some true to size, others a bit large.

I am so excited to own two blouses from the collection. I think both of them will work well tucked into skirts and high waisted jeans and untucked with skinny jeans. As for the skirt, I love it because I've been wanting a longer pleated skirt, but it's actually a bit large on me so it would need to be taken in. As much as it is, it does seem a bit silly to spend money tailoring skirt from Target.

Victoria Victoria Beckham Full Video

Last week we had a quick peak at the Victoria by Victoria Beckham line thanks to a quick preview. Now the full film by Quentin Jones has been released. The quirky artistic video shows adorable graphic cut-outs, papers unfolding, cats, crumpling paper and that reflect the clothes themselves. The off-beat music is the perfect backdrop for the bold colors, easy silhouettes and cutesy graphics

As I've previously mentioned dresses are still pretty steep, priced between £500 and £800 (which translates to $780-$1248 USD).

The celebrity set is already embracing the new line with Danielle Lineker, Michelle Williams and Victoria Beckham herself sporting the line.

DIY: Re-Upholstering Chair Cushions

A little while ago I shared my recent addiction to making over my living room. I’ve been busy as a bee whenever I get a spare moment sanding, painting and finishing furniture I have to take it from a random assortment of furniture that I ended up acquiring into a home. Now that my furniture was nicely painted in burgundy I decided that I had to get some new fabric to liven up the look. I went to several fabric stores in NYC before deciding that Mood seemed to have the best selection of upholstery/home dec fabrics I could find - the entire lower floor for that matter.

I brought my color swatches and took pictures with my phone to remember what the print would like like and got swatches to bring home and make sure that it still looked good before purchasing the fabric. The fabric I originally chose ended up not looking like the correct shade of grey once I saw it against my table and I went back to the drawing board before finding this retro geometric print that I loved. Since most of my furniture in the apartment is solid, a print is great compliment to add life and character to your furnishings.

I bought 1 1/2 yards of fabric just to be on the safe side but I probably could have done fine with 1 1/4 yards.

Tools you'll need:
1 1/2 yards of fabric - depending on the size of your seat cushions
Screwdriver
Heavy Duty Flat Staple Remover
Pliers
Safety Glasses (I actually just wore eye glasses)
Heavy Duty Staple Gun
Heavy Duty Staples
Pen/marker/chalk
Sharp Scissors

The first thing I did was remove the cushions from the chair frame using a screw driver.

Then using a staple remover, gently slide the remover under the staple and I found that a slight wiggle helps loosen the staples to pull them up. If only one end of the staple comes out, you can use pliers to easily pull the other end out. There were a couple staples that brute force couldn't muster out so I just left them in the chair.

My chairs were previously covered in 2 layers of fabric and starting to get really thick so I pulled both layers off and used the original fabric covering as a pattern for cutting out my new fabric. If desired you can iron out the fabric so it's nice and flat (but I didn't bother). Now carefully trace out the pattern from the old covering with a pen/chalk and trace out as many as the number of chairs you are covering.

Cut out the traced patterns using sharp scissors and center the chair seats against the wrong side of the fabric.

Carefully place pins as you center the seat in the fabric with a gentle relaxed but firm pull. Do not pull too tight or you will get puckering. Once your fabric has been placed you can use the staple gun to staple down the fabric. I started at the centers of all four sides for even distribution of fabric and worked my way outwards.

When you get to the corners pull gently as you carefully fold the edges to wrap the corners - kind of like wrapping a present before securing with staples.

After months of re-painting, sanding and finding the perfect fabric I was so excited to see the finished results! At last a room to call my own...now to tackle my next furniture project!

Runway Review: Alexis Mabille Couture Spring 2012

The award for this couture week's best head pieces and most dramatic make-up definitely goes to Alexis Mabille with the bold rainbow of color parading down the runway in head to toe monochromatic looks and faces/headpieces to match. It was as if Spring itself had come to life on the runway and the ladies were in full bloom.

The quote from Marcel Proust, "It is only women who do not know how to dress that are afraid of colors", was only too appropriate for a show that was built on the energy of color.

Lace panels/insets, cascading flounces and flutter sleeves created a very wearable, feminine and lady-like collection that was bold but not ground breaking. There is something about the dresses that makes them look like the clothing of royalty and not of the Hollywood set although more than a couple pieces would probably make a statement on the red carpet.

DIY: Waxed TOMS

I've been wanting to wax some of my shoes forever - but never wanted to deal with the mess of melting wax....until I came across a wax in a bar format (no heating/melting required) called Otter Wax. After scanning their blog I noticed a post that showcased The Coveted doing a DIY on a pair of jeans which would also be a great project! (click here to check out the video if you're interested in trying this out on a pair of jeans)

If you know me, you know that I love TOMS for their comfort and philanthropy - and since they're canvas, I thought they would be perfect for this project.

For this DIY here's what you'll need:

Item of clothing/accessory/shoes that you want to wax (canvas/denim would work best in my opinion)
Bar of fabric wax (I used Otter Wax which requires no melting/heating)
About 20 minutes

To start, I brushed off any dirt/lint/dust from the canvas surface before applying the wax. Next, I began applying the wax to the shoe. I put my hand inside the shoe and made a fist to provide a hard surface to rub the wax in.

The wax itself is really firm so it doesn't crumble or crack when you're applying it which is nice. Since the shoe has quite a few seams and curves, I used short, firm, strokes to apply the wax. I went over each area a few times to ensure adequate coverage. Once you apply the wax, you'll notice the area darken - signalling that the wax has been applied to that area.

Some of the wax will build up at seams when you're rubbing it into the material so I ended up going back and smoothing out/removing the excess wax with my finger. If you'd rather not get the wax on your hands, you can use a toothpick to remove the excess.

Keep going and before you know it, you're done!

I couldn't believe how quick and easy the process was so I decided to do a second pair. When applying the wax, just note that it's a good idea to take your item outside or into a well lit area once you're done so you can spot any inconsistencies in your application and touch up accordingly.

The very last step is keep your shoes in a cool/dry place to let the wax absorb fully into the fabric for 24 hours. Any leftover wax can be used for future touchups or another project.

It's funny to build an entire outfit around a bag, but that is what I did. I was super excited about my new Rebecca Minkoff purse that the lovely team at RM sent me just before the holidays. Since the color is a soft Barbie pink with a subtle pearlized finish it is the perfect gateway into Spring dressing. Although it's pink, it almost feels like a neutral and I decided to use pastels to uplift my otherwise dark world of winter dressing. It was the first time I rocked a full size Minkoff MAC and found that my 2 cell phones, huge wallet, basic beauty products, glasses and Nook were all able to fit with ease.

Runway Review: Versace Couture Spring 2012

Versace Couture for Spring 2012 embodies what Donatella does best - glamour, drama and a second skin fit like no other. The dresses are almost painted on some of the bodies of the models while futuristic, structural elements including slashes of metallic beading and architectural arches extend from the shoulders, hips and bust to emphasize the woman's body.

The overall effect is strong as a warrior but always 100% a woman. I love the contrast of the delicate lace panels with the fitted corset-like construction. As for colors while the vast majority of the collection was in dove grey - bold yellow, gold, acid green and vermillion found their way to make some noise. While the collection was absent of any signature prints the play of texture and silhouette seemed to be the most powerful message. Sheer panelling and thigh high slits are also noteworthy trends.

Fall 2012 Trends: Metal Plated Shoes

I know winter has barely begun, but as I was perusing GQ's 100 Best Pairs from Fashion Week, I noticed quite a few pairs featuring metal for Fall 2012. Classic silhouettes paired with chunkier hardware accents provide for an edgier take on modern footwear.

From Costume National, to Louis Vuitton, to Salvatore Ferragamo, to YSL - there were plenty of options which were showcased down the runways.

When it comes to print on print action I'm a fan as long as the color families are in the same realm I think it works so today I combined a ditzy print dress with a pair of bold leggings and captured some of those color pops in my bright necklace and socks.

As for my hair, I've wanted a change for a long time and I've been thinking of getting an undercut...but the weather outside is so cold it makes me think if I lose my hair I'll find myself in cold regret. I decided to sort of do an quick look inspired by undercuts by twisting my hair and using mini clips to hold it in place. While it is far from perfect - note the errant strand twisting in the back - it was fun to change things up for a day.

Runway Review: Dior Couture Spring 2012

The house of Dior still lives with or without the scandal that is John Galliano and in his second couture collection for the house Bill Gaytten has done a marvelous job of capturing the spirit of Dior with so many references to the past without being stuck there. Classic Dior silhouettes that make a woman feel like a woman – like the New Look of 1947 are in abundance but they are made fresh again being whipped together in translucent fabrics. It’s almost like you’re have X-ray vision into something that from a glance should be very lady-like and the effect is quite provocative.

One of my favorite pieces is actually this tucked sheath on the very right that almost looks like pattern drafting coming to life with it’s almost muslin color and bold pick stitches. I guess seeing the art of patternmaking dissected is very appealing to me. As for color palette the collection was predominantly black, white and nude with a few pops of red and violet. Although monochromatic and without pattern I thought it was the best possible showcase for what Gaytten was trying to achieve. Bravo for a collection well done.

First Look at Victoria by Victoria Beckham

Victoria Beckham is one of those rare celebrities that made a smooth transition from being a world famous singer into a legitimate and respected designer. Season after season her sleek and modern dresses embrace a sense of luxury and empowerment that women hunger for. She is soon to launch a diffusion line called Victoria by Victoria Beckham to be revealed in a full short film next Monday along with a window display at Harvey Nichols. And unfortunately, although the line is definitely more affordable than her namesake collection, dresses are still priced between £500 and £800 (which translates to $780-$1248 USD). From this 20 second teaser I get a sense of playful pops of color, silhouettes that are more breezy and bold graphics.
